Vitantonio Liuzzi has admitted he ‘dreams’ of a McLaren drive in the future, rather than a Ferrari drive despite being Italian.
He started his F1 career with Red Bull back in 2005 as a test driver before moving onto the sister team, Toro Rosso. Despite scoring the teams first point, he failed to secure a drive in 2008, however in 2009 he secured a seat with Force India where he is contracted until the end of 2011.
“I’m tied to Force India and have an agreement for the whole of 2011,” Liuzzi told Autosprint. “But my aim would be to race for McLaren, which has always been my favorite team, my dream.”
The 28-year-old reckons his ‘prime’ years are yet to come, citing Mark Webber as an example – the 33-year-old has only recently been in a car quick enough to compete for the championship and currently lies just six points off leader Lewis Hamilton.
“Who would have said last year that the Australian [Mark Webber] would be in the running for the title?”
Liuzzi’s recent result in Canada, where he qualified sixth and started fifth impressed the team, as did his climb from near last to finish ninth after a first corner incident with Felipe Massa.
A change of chassis, back to the one he used for the opening four races because of damage, is thought to have contributed to his poor results in Spain, Monaco and Turkey.
“In Montreal I used the chassis that I had in the first four races of the season. At the beginning I had a good season, but my team-mate, Adrian Sutil, went better when the Force India had greater potential.”
