Webber: ‘Title to become a two-way fight’

Mark Webber is expecting the title battle will be whittled down to just two drivers come the end of the season, as has been the case with most previous championships.

So far, 2010 has seen the closest racing in terms of performance for some time. Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari are all on similar terms whilst Mercedes and Renault aren’t far behind.

Currently, any driver on the grid could potentially win the title, however it’s likely the title will be fought out between the top five, possibly six drivers in the championship; Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button, Mark Webber, Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg.

Webber though, reckons five will become three shortly, with two drivers finally emerging as the front-runners for the title with a handful of races remaining on the calendar.

“Last year Jenson [Button] won many races at the beginning, but that’s not usually what happens,” he said. “It is more often the case that until mid-season there are three to five drivers all together.

“Then at about 70% in, there will probably be only three or so in it and with a few races to go it becomes a duel. Perhaps the champion will even be known before the last race.”

Currently 19 points separate the top five drivers, six points less than a race win rewards under the new points system.
