Lewis Hamilton took a sensational victory in Canada, in what was a difficult race with several leaders. Jenson Button came in second to give McLaren their third 1-2 of 2010.

Fernando Alonso crossed the line in third ahead of both Red Bull’s. Sebastian Vettel took fourth ahead of his team-mate.

Race report:

An eventful start saw Vitaly Petrov jump the start which he was later penalised for with a drive-through penalty. His jump start saw him pushed wide onto the grass where he span into the path of Pedro de la Rosa, both coming together but avoiding the remainder of the field. Causing the accident saw Petrov receive a second drive-through penalty.

Felipe Massa came together with Vitantonio Liuzzi spinning the Italian round into oncoming traffic. He dropped from fifth to last as he pitted for a new nosecone, along with Felipe Massa.

Kamui Kobayashi jumped the kerbs into the final chicane which launched his car into the ‘wall of champions’ he recovered to the pitlane avoiding a safety car period.

Mark Webber pressured Jenson Button in the opening stages, managing to pass him into turn six.

Lewis Hamilton pitted early in the race, followed by Fernando Alonso. The Spaniard managed to get out first, although they exited at the same time. That left Vettel and Webber to takeover second and third.

Michael Schumacher pitted from third on lap 13, he came out into Robert Kubica’s path. The two duelled into turn three, both cutting the chicane, Schumacher though, suffered some damage and pitted for a second time.

Mark Webber was the first Red Bull to pit, re-joining behind Button in sixth. Meanwhile Vettel pitted on the next lap, joining ahead of his team-mate.

Sebastian Buemi led the race for a single lap, however pitting handed the lead back to Hamilton.

The race began to settle down in the mid-stage, although several drivers made seconds stops.

Pedro de la Rosa retired on lap 31 with an engine failure.

A midfield squabble between Sutil and Hulkenberg resulted in Webber losing time to Hamilton and Alonso.

Jarno Trulli retired on lap 46 with a suspected engine failure.

Lewis Hamilton pushed past Mark Webber on the start/finish on lap 49 for position. Fernando Alonso attempted a pass before Webber peeled off into the pits for his final stint on the softs.

Timo Glock retired on lap 55.

Button passed Alonso on lap 56 as the Ferrari driver struggled to pass a back-marker without losing time. That put the McLaren driver just 3.6s behind his team-mate in first.

Button managed to close the gap on Hamilton to just a second before Hamilton put in some flying laps to increase it to 3.6s one again. Meanwhile, Robert Kubica was the man setting the pace, a 1:17.178, the quickest lap of the race.

Felipe Massa suffered a broken front-wing after Schumacher forced him into the wall on lap 64. Massa had to pit on the next lap as the wing hung dangerously.

Sebastian Vettel radioed the team toward the end of the race to ask if he could push for the fastest lap of the race before being told bluntly over the radio that he shouldn’t, and should look after his tyres instead.

Schumacher once again came under pressure, this time from Liuzzi on the final lap. The seven-time world champion lost two places in the final corner to move from ninth to 11th, giving the two FI’s points paying positions.

Hamilton finally cruised across the line after 70 laps to take McLaren’s third 1-2 of 2010.

*Robert Kubica will be investigated after the race for cutting in front of Adrian Sutil as he entered the pits. (Update: Reprimand)
