Virgin will change the Cosworth engine in Lucas di Grassi’s Virgin car after discovering it was down on power.
The fault in the engine is the reason as to why Di Grassi was 1.4 seconds behind his team mate in qualifying as confirmed by Virgin Nick Wirth.
“The power loss from this engine is the sole reason that Lucas is so far behind Timo and having discussed the issue with Cosworth we have no other option but to change the engine for the race,” he told reporters.
Di Grassi won’t incur a penalty for the engine change as he remains within his eight engines per season limit and will start from his qualifying position of 23rd.
