Its come to light that Red Bull were forced to change their diffuser in Monaco after McLaren’s engineering director, Paddy Lowe identified something which didn’t conform to the regulations.
Lowe spotted the part, which went against recent regulations regarding diffuser design, in Barcelona the week previous to Monaco and informed the FIA who then asked Red Bull to modify it before the race, which they subsequently dominated.
Red Bull have been very coy about allowing people to see their rear set-up, especially the competition. However it seems Lowe caught enough of a glimpse to spot the part.
“Obviously the rear of the cars are so sensitive, we try and make it as difficult for others to see as possible,” Red Bull team principal Christian Horner told Auto Motor und Sport.
Despite changing the part, Horner joked that removing the part made the car even quicker.
“We had to run a version without those [diffuser] wings and found that it was even better than before,” said Horner.
