The FIA looks set move the Australian grand prix start time from 5pm to a possible 4pm for the 2011 season after light level tests recorded dangerously low levels without artificial lighting.
Several drivers complained about the combination of a setting sun and the rain showers in Melbourne, giving them poor visibility.
“In Australia it was certainly over the limit by the end of the race, it was certainly too dark,” said Michael Schumacher.
“I understand that the FIA has measured this and will take action for next year – sometimes you have to have the experience.
“There seem to be some guidelines now on what light you have to have as a minimum,” he added.
Robert Kubica agreed with Schumacher, also noting that this weekend’s Malaysian GP could also suffer from poor light levels with a certain deluge forecast for the race at somepoint, combined with the late start time, which has already been moved from 5pm to 4pm for this season.
“It’s risky,” said Kubica. “Like today if there were big clouds, heavy rain and a lot of spray it would just be too dark.”
“After Australia we already complained twice.
“I think the FIA did some measurements and it’s clear that it’s just too dark for the safety targets they’ve put, so I think it’s a serious problem.”
