Sebastian Vettel took a storming pole position in Australia, throwing the car around in sector three to cross the line under the 1:24s barrier, the only driver to do so all weekend.
“A great result for both of us and for the team,” said the German.
Whilst Mark Webber was disappointed not to get pole at his home race, settling for second, Vettel joked it was revenge for the German GP where Webber took pole and the win.
“It’s Mark’s home race and it’s a little bit funny that he got the pole last year in Germany, so this is just a bit of a revenge!”
The pole position lap was something of a driving master-class as Vettel threw the car into the penultimate corner, at one point sliding off the track but managing to keep control.
“My first lap was quick but the last lap was amazing and on the edge; I lost a bit at the last corner, onto the main straight, but it was a very good lap,” Vettel said.
“I was very happy and I think the result says it all. I’m now looking forward to tomorrow – it’s always good to start from the front and there’s always a lot happening at Albert Park, so its good to start from pole.”
