With the McLaren rear-wing and air-flow device deemed legal today by the FIA technical delegate Charlie Whiting, the race to copy the idea has begun.
Much like the Double-Diffuser concept in 2009, teams hurriedly copied the idea and implemented it onto their own cars.
Red Bull are one of the teams who asked the FIA to look into the matter, and team principal Christian Horner, has admitted they are likely to copy the idea.
“It is similar to the double diffuser issue, in that teams will pursue different variants of that wing between now and the end of the season,” he told Autosport.
“I think that it’s unlikely that we would protest it, so we would look at developing our own version.”
McLaren’s Martin Whitmarsh also suggested teams would try and copy the idea.
“People will look at what we have got on our car and I would imagine that most teams are now looking for how they would implement such a system.”
“I think there was a ‘what is it?’ question initially, then there was ‘it can’t be legal’. Now people are starting to understand it, there is ‘how quickly can we implement it?’ Most people are saying that it is something quite ingenious. This was a very creative and ingenious individual in our company who came up with the idea and we’ve developed it.”
Although it might not be an easy development to copy as the chassis tubs are homologated this year.
