Jose Maria Lopez has switched his sights from USF1 to Campos Meta, reported to become Hispania Racing, after exiting his contract with the US based team.
The Argentinean driver had been set to race with USF1 as their first driver, however team principals Ken Anderson and Peter Windsor asked the FIA to defer their 2010 entry until the 2011 season.
“There is a big chance he can be the Campos reserve driver,” said Victor Rosso, part of Lopez’s management team.
“Being able to turn the tables at the last moment gives us a little bit of relief, because the past 15 days we have lived would not be wished upon my worst enemy,” added Rosso.
Lopez’s father told Ultima Vuelta that Lopez manager, Felipe McGough had succeeded in freeing Lopez from the USF1 contract, and had made Campos boss Jose Ramon Carabante aware of Lopez’s available services.
“It was a tricky situation, but now we are free, we had to find a solution so that Jose Maria was no longer tied to the US team contract.
“We have already told him [Carabante] that Lopez is free, they are aware of everything, and now we are waiting to see what is decided in Europe.
“We are looking at anything that allows Jose Maria to stay in Formula One, also as the reserve driver.”
