Ferrari, Mercedes respond to FIA’s camera demand

Ferrari and Mercedes have both reacted to the FIA’s demand that they change the design of their nose-mounted camera’s before the first race of the season.

As we reported earlier this week, the two teams as well as Toro Rosso were told the way in which they had mounted the camera pods on the nose section was illegal.

Therefore all three cars would have failed scrutineering at the first race in Melbourne in two weeks time if they had ignored the request.

As can be seen above (Ferrari) and below (Mercedes), both teams had adopted the ‘bunny ears’ solution. The FIA said this meant the overall dimension extended beyond the 150mm limit set out in the regulations.

Rather than follow the traditional route, like Toro Rosso (see here), they have found a clever solution to ensure the pods sit as high as possible so they don’t disrupt important airflow coming off the front wing, whilst remaining within the regulatory 150mm limit.

It’s believed two teams have already complained to the FIA, claiming the new versions are still illegal. However the FIA has cleared Mercedes concept, but has yet to comment on Ferrari’s.
