Rally driver Ken Block, who was also known for his driving stunts and online presence, has died following a snowmobile accident at the age of 55.

The news was confirmed on Monday evening by his Hooligan Racing team.

“It’s with our deepest regrets that we can confirm that Ken Block passed away in a snowmobile accident today,” a statement read.

“Ken was a visionary, a pioneer and an icon. And most importantly, a father and husband. He will be incredibly missed.”

Block’s rally career began in 2005 and he was named the Rookie of the Year in the Rally America Championship.

He competed in the highest level of rallying competition, the World Rally Championship, on several occasions, with his last entry coming in 2018.

Block was also known for his Rallycross entries over the years.

As well as his driving career, Block was the cofounder of sportswear company DC Shoes, which produces some of the most recognisable footwear on the market.

Block’s successful YouTube channel, which has almost two million subscribers, last saw activity two weeks ago.

His death occurred in the USA, with the Utah Wasatch County and the Sheriff’s Office stating that Block was riding on a steep slope when his snowmobile upended and landed on top of him.

Tributes to Block have been streaming in since the news of his passing was made public – including from 2009 Formula 1 World Champion Jenson Button.

“In shock at the passing of Ken Block,” Button wrote on social media. “Such a talent that did so much for our sport.

“He was a true visionary with his own unique style & infectious smile. Our sport lost one of the best today but more importantly a great man. Sending love & hugs to the Block family.”
