Fernando Alonso has conceded that, coming to the half way point in the season, that his chances of fighting for the title are now over.
The Spaniard qualified 19th for the British Grand Prix and admitted it would be difficult to score points from that position, essentially ending any chance of title fight.
“Yes,” he said when asked if it was over this year, before adding: “I don’t like to lie.”
The Ferrari driver reckons it’s purely a fight between the Mercedes duo of Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton, whilst anyone else who says they have a chance isn’t being honest.
“I think if anyone apart from Rosberg and Hamilton is telling you they believe they can be world champion this year they will [be] lying,” he stated.
Alonso sits fourth in the championship just four points behind third placed Daniel Ricciardo, but the gao between third and second stands at 53 points and a further 29 to Rosberg in the lead.
