Foggia streaks to Silverstone win as title chargers Garcia, Guevara taken out

Dennis Foggia flew to a second Moto3 victory of 2022 in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, while points leaders Sergio Garcia and Ivan Guevara were taken out.

Foggia remained a permanent fixture within the top five throughout the 17-lap contest, the Leopard rider at times looking to have the speed to pull away from the pack before being ultimately pulled back in.

The Italian crucially though managed to recover from a mid top-ten position to the lead at the start of the final tour, coming under attack from KTM duo Jaume Masia and Deniz Oncu.

Despite Oncu looking to dive through on several occasions on the final circulation Foggia continuously batted away the Turkish pilot’s advances and crafted a slender lead heading into Brooklands for the final time, one that allowed him to exit Luffield and streak across the line to score success.

Masia put on a strong recovery to take the runners-up spot from 21st on the grid just 0.252s adrift of the victorious Foggia, with Oncu completing the rostrum positions after rapid rookie David Munoz crashed at the final bend while challenging for the spot.

Series leader Garcia as well as GasGas team-mate Guevara – separated by just three points heading to Silverstone – were both taken out by other riders in the closing moments, the former bowled out by Ayumu Sasaki at Village before the latter was taken down by Ivan Ortola at Stowe on the final lap.

Kaito Toba charged through the pack in the closing tours to steal fourth having run on the fringes of the points for the bulk of the encounter, while Stefano Nepa ended up fifth just ahead of pole-man Diogo Moreira, who struggled to make progress after dropping well out of the top ten early on.

John McPhee finished off his final home Moto3 appearance in seventh ahead of Ryusei Yamanaka, with Snipers rider Andrea Migno taking ninth just clear of Carlos Tatay’s CFMoto entry.

Scott Ogden scored more valuable points in his first home Moto3 outing with a solid run to 12th just ahead of Ricardo Rossi.

With the two highest riders in the championship failing to score, Foggia closes to within 42 markers of the points lead with eight races remaining, reigniting his chances for a late season charge at the Aspar duo.
