Lewis Hamilton asserted his dominance over the rest of the field as he was the only man to get into the 1:15s, and he did so by almost four-tenths.
The Briton’s best lap was almost half a second quicker than Felipe Massa could manage in his Mercedes-powered Williams, but the Brazilian will surely be happy to split the two Mercedes cars.
Nico Rosberg was third fastest ahead of the Ferrari of Fernando Alonso and the Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo in fifth.
A number of drivers struggled on Saturday morning, with several locking-up and cutting the chicane and the hairpin.
The session even saw a red-flag after Esteban Gutierrez span at turn 3 as he made contact with the wall, heavily damaging his Sauber.
