Nico Rosberg has tweeted his support after two bystanders were seriously hurt during a promotional event on a closed course in which the German was racing round at the time.
Rosberg and DTM driver Pascal Wehrlein were in separate cars at the time, racing one another with players from Germany’s FC Schalke 04 alongside them in the passenger seat.
It’s reported that Wehrlein swerved to avoid hitting Rosberg, lost control and ploughed into the two bystanders, both of which are in a serious condition.
After the event, Rosberg took to Twitter to share his support and thoughts for the injured pair: “I am shocked by the accident. My thoughts are with the two people who were injured and I wish them a fast recovery.”
Mercedes released a statement adding: “An incident occurred during a visit to the training camp of the German National Football team: while driving on a closed circuit, the DTM driver Pascal Wehrlein wounded two people who they unexpectedly encountered as they walked along part of a stretch of the closed track.
“We can not make any statement regarding the severity of the injury, as both the injured parties are currently undergoing medical treatment. Pascal Wehrlein was unhurt in the incident.
“We are deeply saddened by this incident and we send best wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured. We will work in full cooperation with the authorities to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.”
