Ecclestone says double points ‘probably not fair’

Bernie Ecclestone has admitted that the double points regulation is “probably not fair”, but says it’s the right thing for the spectacle.

The 83-year-old was asked about the rule which awards 50 points for a win at the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi.

It has come under fire from F1 fans – with over 80 per cent of our readers voting against the idea – but Ecclestone, despite admitting it being unfair, says it’s right.

“I wouldn’t have suggested it if I’d have thought it wasn’t the right thing to do,” he told Sky Sports.

“I was concerned that the championship would still be maybe open with two or three races to go and then somebody could catch up.”

However he added: “Somebody’s done all that work early on, got so many points, and somebody can just pop in and do [it] in a couple of races. It’s probably not fair.”
