Reliability may very well prove to be just as important as speed in 2014, so whilst many are focussing on the overall test times to give a picture of where each team stands, it’s just as important to consider how much mileage they’ve managed too.
As with every figure that comes from testing, they don’t necessarily paint an accurate picture, but we can certainly make some loose estimates.
Williams completed the most mileage in Bahrain over the four-days combined, closely followed by Mercedes. As with Jerez, Red Bull struggled again, completing far less than half Williams total.
The power unit stats tell a similar story. Mercedes once again ruled, and whilst Renault completed more mileage than Ferrari, as the average mileage table shows, Ferrari completed over 620 miles per team whilst Renault completed just over 516 miles. (Ferrari supplies three teams compared to Renault’s four).
The combined mileage (Jerez and Bahrain) continues the story, backing up what we already know, Renault is struggling, as are its customers, whilst both Ferrari and to a greater degree Mercedes, are well ahead on the reliability front.
