FIA president Jean Todt may face opposition in the upcoming presidential election from Briton David Ward who is considering running against the Frenchman.
Todt is coming to the end of his four-year reign after he defeated Ari Vatanen in the last election when former-president Max Moseley stepped down. It’s believed Todt is eyeing a second term as president of the sanctioning body.
Ward though, a former aid to Moseley and the current director general of the FIA Foundation, has signalled his interest in running for the top job to give voters a choice.
“This is not what I intended nor what I wanted, but I am certainly thinking about [standing] because it is important to have a debate,” he told The Times.
“You can only have a debate if there is a choice of candidates, and there is no debate if there is no choice.”
The 56-year-old is involved in several organisations dedicated to road safety, including the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety. He is the Executive Secretary of the independent Commission for Global Road Safety, a member of the Executive Board of the World Bank’s Global Road Safety Facility, and represents the FIA Foundation in the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration and is the Co-Chair of its Vehicle Safety Project Group. He is also a Trustee of the International Road Assessment Programme
