The Renault team have expressed a dim view of Lewis Hamilton’s weaving at the Malaysian GP.
In the early stages of the race, Hamilton came up behind Vitaly Petrov, who defended his position before making a mistake into the final corner, that allowed Hamilton to pass, but Petrov regained his position into turn one.
On the following lap, Hamilton once again got past the Russian driver, but Petrov picked up Hamilton’s tow, which enabled him to stick by the McLaren.
The 2008 world champion then weaved across the track four times to break the tow. Regulations stipulate drivers cannot change direction more than once to protect their position.
The McLaren driver received a warning rather than a penalty from the FIA stewards.
Eric Boullier told Autosport that his team raised the point with the FIA, but had decided not to take the matter further.
“We just raised our point of view,” Boullier said. “Very frankly, it is very clear in the regulations that you can have one change of direction, so when you do three in a row something is wrong.
“He got a warning for dangerous driving, but I am not sure it is enough.”
