Sebastian Vettel believes Nico Rosberg’s pole position lap was “unbeatable” after he could only manage second to the Mercedes driver on Saturday.
Rosberg’s P1 time of 1:32.330 was over two tenths quicker than the leading Red Bull of Vettel, and whilst the German will start on the dirty side of the grid on Sunday, he isn’t disappointed to miss out on the top slot.
“I’m definitely not disappointed,” he said after.
“I have to say congratulations to Nico because he put a very strong lap in and I think it was all his today. Initially when I crossed the line I saw that I didn’t go first and that I had second place on one of the screens, but I didn’t know how much was missing.
“The lap was fine but when I saw the gap to Nico it was clear that, even with the perfect lap, he was unbeatable today.”
Having learned from the Chinese GP how important tyre saving is, Vettel is confident Red Bull’s decision to save tyres, albeit to a lesser extent than in China, will pay off.
“I’m very happy and we managed to save some tyres throughout qualifying. It will be all about tyres and tyre degradation tomorrow so we will see what happens, but obviously it’s good to start from the front.”
