Toto Wolff has declared himself “happy” with Mercedes start to the season, but added that they cannot get “carried away” despite massive improvements.
The outfit sits just four points off second place in the constructors’ championship after two races which saw Lewis Hamilton claim his first podium for the team in Malaysia, where he later declared the team Red Bull’s closest challenger.
Wolff knows there is much to do to ensure they can maintain their competitiveness and reel in the leaders.
“We had a good solid race, the world champions [Red Bull] has still shown us that there is lots to do, and that we should switch our lights off later than the others in the offices,” he told Autosport.
“The expectations are there, but we must not let ourselves be carried away.
“This is what I hoped for; this is where the team should be,” he added.
“I am happy [that] in the second race we have been consolidating that position, but it is about keeping working, keeping developing and looking forward. That race is already forgotten.”
