Stuck: Brawn to blame for failings, not Haug

Ross Brawn is to blame for Mercedes’ failings and should have left, rather than Mercedes motorsport boss Norbert Haug, according to Hans-Joachim Stuck.

Haug, who has been in his role for 22 years, will step down at the end of the year after admitting he and the board came to an agreement following the poor results at their Formula 1 team.

Former F1 driver and now president of the German Motorsport Federation (DMSB) has defended Haug, placing the blame squarely on Brawn for Mercedes difficult season.

“The failures in F1 are only attributable to Brawn,” said the 61-year-old. “The car was just not fast enough.

“McLaren has demonstrated it isn’t the Mercedes engine. Even a small team like Force India has enjoyed success with the Mercedes-Benz engines.”

Stuck says the loss of Haug is ‘huge’ for the sport and ultimately he isn’t to blame for a poorly designed car which failed to score points in five of the final six races.

“The departure of Haug is a huge loss for the sport,” he added. “He was not ultimately the one who designed the car.

“The car is [the responsibility] of team boss Ross Brawn, he should have made it better.”
