Red Bull have confirmed that they have contacted the FIA to make them aware that they would be willing to host a round of the 2013 championship at the Red Bull Ring.
The circuit, formerly the A1-Ring, was purchased by Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz who redeveloped it into the Red Bull Ring. It was reopened in 2011 and hosted a round of the DTM series.
Red Bull’s motorsport advisor Helmut Marko confirmed he had made contact with the governing body about hosting a race.
“We made the FIA aware of the fact that there is the Red Bull Ring and it holds a full grade F1 licence,” said the Austrian.
Whilst Turkey has been put forward as a likely candidate for the vacant slot on the calendar, a lack of government support has cast doubts over its return therefore putting Austria in the spotlight.
It’s unlikely the event would make a profit with a maximum capacity of just 40,000. However Marko believes the Austrian government would be willing to offer funding as well as the local Styria government.
He also made reassurances about the local hotels and transport network which includes a high-speed toll road to the city of Graz and a small airport just outside of the circuit.
“It worked in the 1970s and 1980s too,” he added. “And we have a full amount of hotels in Graz.”
