Montezemolo attacks Ecclestone and F1 rules

Luca di Montezemolo had strong words for Bernie Ecclestone during a press conference in Valencia where the Ferrari World Finals are taking place.

The Ferrari president attacked Ecclestone after the F1 chief said the overtaking scandal, in which Ferrari requested clarification on whether Sebastian Vettel had overtaken Jean-Eric Vergne illegally, was “a joke” and “not Ferrari-like.”

In response, Montezemolo suggested the 82-year-old might be too old to comprehend his own comments.

“Ecclestone? You have to show respect for your elders, especially when they get to that stage in which they are no longer in control of what they say,” he said.

“However, old age is clearly incompatible with certain roles and responsibilities.”

The 65-year-old also took the time to criticise the current technical regulations which put a heavy reliance on aerodynamics, and the lack of testing.

“There are a number of things that are not right in F1 and the moment has come to finally sort them out in the appropriate places,” he added.

“It is not acceptable that F1 no longer transfers technology to our road cars. The aerodynamics is now becoming something which has nothing to do with the research. This cannot be a sport in which there is no longer testing on the track.

“We have run out of patience. We are car manufacturers, not sponsors. As Ecclestone said, ‘it’s a joke…'”
