Canadian Tire Motorsport Park returns to IMSA calendar in 2022

IMSA has unveiled the schedule for the 2022 WeatherTech Sportscar Championship, with Canadian Tire Motorsport Park making its series return after a two-year absence.

The series schedule features twelve rounds, with no notable new venues appearing on the calendar. Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, meanwhile, is featured after the COVID-19 pandemic made hosting the race in Canada impossible in both 2020 and 2021. The event was last held in 2019.

The 2022 campaign kicks off with the 60th running of the Rolex 24 at Daytona on January 29-30, which is one of five races where all five categories (DPi, LMP2, LMP3, GTD Pro and GTD will be present). It also forms the first of four rounds of the Michelin Endurance Cup.

After Daytona, the Twelve Hours of Sebring takes place on March 16-19 as the second Endurance Cup round, followed by the first Sprint Cup round of the season at Long Beach on April 8-9.

This is followed by races at Laguna Seca (April 29-May 1) and Mid-Ohio (May 13-15) before the 100-minute round for DPi and GTD teams at Belle Isle on June 3-4.

After the six-hour Endurance Cup round at Watkins Glen on June 23-26, Canadian Tire Motorsport Park then holds a second Sprint Cup round on July 1-3.

Two weeks later, the first of two GT-only rounds is held at Lime Rock Park, followed by a race featuring all five classes at Road America and a second GT-only race at Virginia International Raceway.

The 2022 season is then concluded with the traditional ten-hour Petit Le Mans round at Road Atlanta on September 28 – October 1.

The Roar Before the Rolex 24 will also once again take place prior to the season opener on January 21-23. Notably, IMSA confirms that the 100-minute sprint race held for the first time this past January will make its return.

Racing has changed so much so it seems from year to year that it’s near impossible to catch up on it all. This has been going on ever since my initial interest back in the early 60s starting at Mosport when it first opened. I’m lost now!
