Formula One cars will not run on electricity only whilst in the pits following confirmation from the FIA that the requirement would be dropped from the 2014 regulations.
Plans had been put in place for 2014, when new engine regulations are introduced, for cars to be electrically operated at all times whilst entering and exiting the pits.
Article 5.19 of the 2014 Technical Regulations states: “The car must be run in electric mode (no ignition and no fuel supply to the engine) at all times when being driven in the pitlane.”
It’s believed Mercedes, Ferrari and Renault have written to the governing body requesting they delay the idea over safety concerns that silent cars could be a danger to those operating in the pits as well as the cost involved.
FIA president Jean Todt has reportedly agreed to delay the idea for at least three years.
