A non-bailable arrest warrant has been issued against Force India team owner Vijay Mallya following unpaid debts on his airline Kingfisher.
The warrant has been issued by the Indian city of Hyderabad and relates to bounced cheques of almost $2 million, paid to settle user fees at Hyperbad’s International Airport.
A report by AFP says Mallya and four KFA officials failed to attend a court summons and are therefore wanted for arrest.
“Since they failed to appear before the magistrate, the court has ordered issuance of NBW [non-bailable warrants] against Kingfisher Airlines, Vijay Mallya and four other KFA officials,” it said.
The airline is currently in financial turmoil with debts running into the billions, forcing Mallya to sell parts of his profitable businesses such as his brewing company to multi-national Diageo.
It’s unclear of how this action might effect the Force India F1 team, though it’s unlikely Mallya will attend the upcoming Indian Grand Prix for fear of arrest.
