Mercedes will take its upgraded exhaust package to the Singapore Grand Prix after successfully testing the development during the young driver test.
The outfit has lagged behind its biggest rivals in terms of upgrades after it decided to focus its efforts on understanding the tyres. This has seen them drop off the pace quite significantly.
However, during the test at Magny-Cours in which Sam Bird and Brendon Hartley covered over 1,000km, Ross Brawn and the teams engineers were impressed by the level of performance the Coanda-exhausts offered.
The same style of exhaust is currently used by McLaren, Ferrari and Sauber and uses the cars downwash to channel the exhaust gases to the lower-rear of the car to create a ‘blown-diffuser’ effect.
The upgrades will debut on the cars during Friday practice where final evaluations will take place before the teams confirms whether they will be raced.
Mercedes also tested a Lotus-style F-duct/DDRS during the test, but this isn’t likely to be seen at Singapore as the device offers little benefit due to the unqiue track layout.
