Fernando Alonso, a close friend of Robert Kubica, says it’s hard to tell whether or not the Polish driver will ever return to 100 per cent fitness, enabling him to get back behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car.
Kubica is still recovering from a horiffic accident in February 2011 in which his rally car crashed and hit a safety barrier which subsequently pierced the car. He was competing in the Ronde di Andora rally at the time as part of a personal pre-season activity.
Alonso remains in contact with Kubica and says his competitive comeback looks uncertain at the moment.
“It’s very hard to say whether Robert will return to 100 per cent fitness and be able to race again in F1,” said the Spaniard in an interview with F1 Racing magazine.
“Now and again we speak and I know how much it hurts him to be so far away from what has always been his world. He has to keep calm and think first and foremost about recovering total functionality of his body, then he can think again about racing,” added Alonso, who at one point looked likely to become team-mates with Kubica when speculation linked the Pole with Felipe Massa’s cockpit prior to the incident.
