Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso has named McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton and Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel as his closest rivals for the drivers’ title this season.
The current championship leader has a 40-point lead over Vettel’s team-mate, Mark Webber, though he failed to mention the Australian by name as a major threat, instead opting for the two drivers behind Webber.
“Hamilton and Vettel are the drivers we have focused on since the beginning,” the 31-year-old told TotalRace. “They are the biggest challengers, but all of the teams are close.”
The Spaniard is keen for those behind him to take points off one another to ensure he can manage the gap, though he is aware of how quickly things can change at the top.
“Hopefully, they will fight among themselves and not one of them will dominate,” he added.
“I think the distance between the top five, top six is not impossible to recover. You just need one good race or two good races and you’re up there.
“Sometimes we can be on the podium, other times maybe it’s only seventh, but we cannot afford to make any mistakes or do anything that we’ll regret.”
