Ferrari have benefitted from wet weather – Fry

Ferrari’s pace, or lack of during the early part of the season, has been helped by the wet weather according to technical boss Pat Fry.

The Englishman believes the team, particularly Fernando Alonso, have benefitted massively from the mixed weather conditions this season.

Alonso took the teams first victory in just the second race of the season despite having a car some 1.5 seconds off the lead pace set by McLaren at the time, a result Fry is certain wouldn’t have been realistic had the race been a dry one.

“Obviously, if it had been a completely dry race in Malaysia, it would have been a different story,” Fry told Autosport. “I don’t think we can hide behind the fact that the weather has helped us out.

Alonso’s second win came in the dry in Valencia after two of the leading cars ahead retired. His third though came in Germany where he managed to qualify on pole, something he did in Britain too, both of which were hit by rain.

“Do I think we’re the quickest in a dry qualifying? I don’t think we are now, but in the last two wet sessions [Silverstone and Hockenheim] it has been more impressive.

“Yes, we were helped by the weather, but then why didn’t other people take advantage of it?”

The team have made the most of the conditions whilst their competitors have fallen by the wayside, allowing Alonso to open up a 40 point lead to Red Bull’s Mark Webber.
