Alonso masters wet conditions to take pole

Fernando Alonso will start on pole position for the German Grand Prix after the Spaniard secured his second pole of the 2012 season for Ferrari.

He starts ahead of Sebastian Vettel for Red Bull, whilst Mark Webber, who qualified third, will start in eighth after he takes a grid penalty for changing his gearbox.

That drop puts Michael Schumacher in third and elevates Nico Hulkenberg to the second row of the grid.

The first session, Q1, remained dry and saw much of what we’ve come to expect this year with Jean-Eric Vergne joining the newcomers in the bottom seven.

As we headed into the second session, the heavens opened and it was those who went out first, namely Jenson Button, who enjoyed the best conditions, whilts we lost big names Felipe Massa, Romain Grosjean and Nico Rosberg.

Q3 saw similar conditions, but Alonso’s penultimate lap was enough to secure him a consecutive pole four tenths faster than Vettel’s best.
