Pastor Maldonado put his Williams top in first practice on Friday for the European Grand Prix.
The Venezuelan managed a late lap eight hundredths quicker than Sebastian Vettel to go quickest ahead of the Red Bull pair.
Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso rounded off the top five.
