In an interview with the official F1 website, Bernie Ecclestone admitted he wasn’t expecting much in terms of improvement from the new teams.

The FOM right’s holder shared an interview with McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton where they discussed several matters, however the most striking was that Ecclestone didn’t expect any significant performance gains from the new teams over the course of the 2010 season.

“After one race you cannot say who will win – except it probably will not be Virgin,” he joked.

“Never say never!,” added Hamilton.

“In this case I can,” continued Ecclestone. “I don’t think the new teams will raise their performance significantly over the season.”

After much controversy at the beginning of the season, which saw Ferrari launch a scathing rant on the new teams, Hamilton defended them as ‘good for the sport’, but also admitted there was a significant gap in Bahrain between them and the front-runners.

“Well, I also have to admit that the gap between the new teams and the established ones is quite significant. But on the other hand, it’s good to see new teams enter Formula One. It’s good for our sport.”
