MotoGP team owner Fausto Gresini’s condition has worsened as the Italian continues to fight nearly a month after contracting Covid-19.

Gresini’s best chances for survival now rely on him being “almost always” asleep as he continues to struggle to breathe on his own because of the damage inflicted on his lungs by both Covid and a short struggle with pneumonia.

The latest statement released by his Gresini Racing MotoGP squad labelled his condition as “still serious” as he remains connected to a mechanical ventilator in order to aid breathing, though said Gresini was still “conscious and combative” when periodically awakened.

Its been nearly a month since the two-time 125cc world champion first checked into hospital after contracting the virus shortly before Christmas, Gresini first attending the local hospital near his home in Imola before being transferred to a specialist Covid-19 ward in Bologna’s Maggiore Carlo Alberta Pizzardi as his condition took a turn for the worse.

He soon had to be put into an induced coma as his illnesses took their toll on his lungs, though his health began to improve following a short fight with intestinal pneumonia which meant he was able to be awakened two weeks ago, hospital staff describing Gresini as “a fighter and very collaborative” in a statement shortly after.

…hospital staff describing Gresini as “a fighter and very collaborative.”
Or did they mean combative, like in the tweet text?
