Tristan Nunez has landed an LMP2 drive with new team WIN Autosport, which will step up to the IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship in 2021.

Nunez spent seven seasons racing for Mazda’s top prototype programme, but was left free to pursue other opportunities when the team scaled down to a single car as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

WIN Autosport was formed by Steven Thomas, the Bronze Cup champion in last year’s IMSA Prototype Challenge.

Thomas will partner Nunez for the full-season line-up, while Thomas’ Prototype Challenge partner Thomas Merrill will join for the endurance rounds. The team’s line-up at Daytona will be completed by reigning Prototype Challenge champion Matt Bell.

“When Tristan believed we had built a good team and wanted to race with us, that was a big boost,” Steven Thomas said. “Tristan is young but already brings so much top-level experience.

“He helps the team in every way. And, of course, he’s quick. Bell is a champion and has great experience, and watch out for Thomas Merrill. He will be as quick as anyone.”

Nunez will be making his LMP2 debut, although he has previously taken raced an ORECA FLM09 in American Le Mans Series’ PC class.

“I believe I can bring WeatherTech racing experience and hopefully make everyone better,” Nunez concluded.
