Green: ‘Most cars will have a stepped nose’

Force India’s technical director Andrew Green believes most Formula 1 cars will follow the new trend of having a stepped or ‘platypus’ nose, thanks to the new regulations governing its height.

Force India unveiled the VJM05 on Friday at the Silverstone circuit just down the road from its factory. Like the Caterham and Ferrari revealed before it, it too features a stepped nose.

Green is confident its the right approach and believes the majority will follow suit, despite McLaren’s smooth nose revealed on Wednesday.

“We think most will follow our philosophy,” he said during a press conference. “There’s a regulation change on the nose height and we went with the drop nose. For us, it’s not a big deal, it’s purely asethetics.

“It [a lower chassis] is an aero philosophy that McLaren apply to the front of their car, last year they were the only team to apply that,” he added.

Green has also set the team a challenge of finishing fifth in the championship, one place higher than last years position.

“It’s a big ask for a small team like ourselves but I’ve got a lot of confidence in the team around me. We learned a lot last year and made big strides in our understanding of car performance and aerodynamics.

“We are taking that another step this year, you can see that in the detail on the car and see the new aero philosophies coming through on it. This is another chapter for Force India.”
