Jos Verstappen will be released from jail on Friday after being imprisoned for aggravated assault and attempted manslaughter, though authorities can’t detain him any longer than 15 days without officially charging him with the offences.
The former Formula 1 driver allegedly drove his car at his ex-girlfriend, 15 years his junior, after they had a row near his house.
He was jailed on January 4th pending an investigation, though an appeal by his lawyer to the Roermond court, citing a lack of solid evidence, was granted, meaning he will walk free on Friday, however the inquiry will continue.
39-year-old Verstappen, who made his F1 debut in 1994 with Benetton and later drove for several teams including Tyrrell, Stewart, Arrows and Minardi, has a history of violence having served a suspended sentence for assaulting his ex-wife as well as fracturing a fellow racers skull after an incident at a karting track in 1998.
