Renault, to be renamed Lotus in 2012, could be set to sign a female test and reserve driver for the upcoming season, according to Maria de Villota, who tested for the team in August of this year.
The 31-year-old most recently competed in the Superleague Formula, finishing 15th overall, having competed with Alan Docking Racing for half the 2009 season.
In an interview with Spanish newspaper AS, Villota claimed to have the backing of the outfit and the reserve role was just a signature away.
“Following the test I did with Lotus Renault at Paul Ricard and thanks to the results I got, I have the opportunity to enter as a reserve driver,” said the Spaniard.
“We already have all the necessary elements, including the sponsors. It’s really just a matter of the contract being signed, but all parties agree.
“The team believe much in me, in my talent and I will go in the car at the time they choose. I must focus on my work and do my best,” she concluded.
