Chip Ganassi Racing could field a Cadillac DPi-VR in the DPi category of the IMSA Weathertech Sportscar Championship next year. The former Ford GT factory squad, which is still active in IndyCar and NASCAR, has been linked to a Cadillac DPi programme
According to RACER, CGR is expected to take the place left by Wayne Taylor Racing, which is ending its Cadillac involvement after this weekend’s Twelve Hours of Sebring to make the switch to the Acura ARX-05 instead.
It would bring the number of teams fielding the V8-engined prototype back to three, joining Action Express Racing and JDC-Miller Motorsports. Action Express confirmed on Tuesday that it has retained Pipo Derani and Felipe Nasr to its line-up for 2021.
Additionally, the addition of the championship-winning team would help increase the number of entries in the championship’s top class, cushioning the departure of Acura Team Penske and Mazda scaling down its program to a single car.
If correct, the team would return to IMSA competition for the first time since the Ford GT program closed its doors in 2019. Prior to that, the team has successful prototype program in both Grand-Am and IMSA.
