The HRT team have announced that their liveries on both F111 cars will run a black ribbon to commemorate the lives of Dan Wheldon and Marco Simoncelli, both of whom passed away last week.
“Dan Wheldon was an extremely talented English IndyCar driver who had won the prestigious Indy 500 on two occasions and the Indy Car Championship in 2005,” read a statement from the Spanish team.
“He was involved in a fatal collision at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway on the 16th of October, 2011 and sadly passed away at the age of 33.
“And just a few days later the motorsports community lost Marco Simoncelli, an exciting young MotoGP racer,” it continued.
“The Italian rider was one of the most charismatic figures off the track and his aggressive style on the track made him one of the most thrilling riders to watch in MotoGP with many tipping the Italian rider to become World Champion sooner or later having already banked a 250cc World Championship in 2008. After an unlucky accident during the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang, Simoncelli died at the age of 24.
“HRT F1 Team would like to pay its respects to the friends and families of both drivers, their teams and the motorsport community as a whole by wearing this black ribbon in their honour on both cars.”
