Taylor takes inaugural IMSA pole at Charlotte, Vanthoor crashes

Jordan Taylor has taken pole position for the Motul 100% Synthetic Grand Prix at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval, while Porsche’s Laurens Vanthoor found the wall on the infield.

Taylor’s fast laps came after the session was resumed following a red flag, which was caused when Laurens Vanthoor made a rare mistake and slid into the wall in the #912 Porsche 911 RSR-19 on the Roval’s infield section. The Porsche was too damaged to continue the session.

After the restart, a charging Taylor jumped ahead and took pole with a 01:14:278. He was almost beaten to pole by the #911 Porsche 911 RSR-19 of Fred Makowiecki, but the Frenchman came up just 0.056s short.

Bruno Spengler led an all-BMW second row in the #25 BMW M8 GTE, qualifying third ahead of team-mate Jesse Krohn in fourth.

Oliver Gavin, despite setting quick laptimes before the stoppage, could not match the pace after the restart and will start his 200th IMSA race with Corvette from fifth place.

AIM Vasser Sullivan has added another pole position to its list of 2020 accomplishments, thanks to a series of fast laps of Aaron Telitz.

Telitz’ best effort of 01:17:954 was enough to put the #14 Lexus RC F GT3 on pole position by 0.123s over the #96 Turner Motorsports BMW M6 GT3 of Robby Foley.

The session was briefly halted when Misha Goikhberg spun and damaged the #57 Meyer Shank Racing Acura NSX GT3 Evo. Rob Ferriol and Jeff Kingsley were also involved in an incident when Kingsley’s #76 Compass Racing McLaren 720S GT3 tagged and spun Ferriol’s #30 Team Hardpoint Audi R8 LMS GT3 Evo.

Matt McMurry was third fastest in the #86 Meyer Shank Racing Acura NSX GT3 Evo, with Kingsley fourth ahead of the #16 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R of Ryan Hardwick, although he has a penalty hanging over his head for a red flag infringment and could drop down the field. If that does happen, it would promote Gar Robinson’s #74 Riley Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT3 to fifth. Robinson currently sits sixth.
