Pirelli to go aggressive with tyres after Japan

Pirelli says it may take an aggressive stance in the remaining few races by choosing the supersoft and soft compounds, now that the championship is all but decided.

Paul Hembery, Pirelli’s motorsport boss, is hoping such an aggressive strategy would force the teams to use the soft tyre more during the race, which would be the ‘harder’ option of the two selected compounds, in order to ensure the tyres aren’t wasted, as is currently the case.

“We want to push people to running on the soft, and try and see what happens,” he told Autosport. “It might be a four stop, but we have said all along that we are aiming for two or three. We have had quite a few two [stop races], we had one or two fours in a season, and it averages out.”

Hembery says the fact that the championship will likely be decided in Japan, means they can take a different attitude to the final races to see if a more aggressive strategy is the right move.

“We don’t have testing so sometimes we are going to push things, and it will make it easier if the championship is decided. We need to understand that for next season to make our choice aggressive again.”

The supplier will indeed bring the supersoft and soft to Korea, a track which is an unknown to the company.
