Alonso convinced Ferrari can redeem itself

Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso has admitted his disappointment at being unable to challenge both Red Bull’s and Jenson Button in Singapore, as has been the case for much of the season, but the Spaniard is convinced Ferrari can redeem itself in the final five races.

It’s been a difficult year for Ferrari. Just one victory, thanks to Alonso at the British GP. He currently sits third, a point behind Button and two ahead of Mark Webber, but more importantly, 125 off the lead – a deficit which can’t be overcome by the season finale in Brazil.

Alonso admits the expected resurgence in the second half of the season didn’t materialise, but that wouldn’t stop him from giving his all to challenge Red Bull and McLaren.

“We were convinced we could make a step forward after the summer break, but it did not turn out that way, while our rivals progressed even more,” said the 30-year-old.

“That does not mean we cannot be in the fight in the next few races: it will be tough, but I can feel the team has a great wish to redeem itself and to prove its worth.

“It is this type of attitude which, last spring, convinced me to extend my contract to the end of 2016. If I did not believe in the quality and determination of the people and the potential in terms of the structure and resources, then I would not have made that decision.

“Now we must knuckle down after a difficult weekend and prepare as well as possible for the race in Suzuka, one of the greatest tracks on the whole championship calendar.”
