Michael Schumacher has poured cold water over rumours that he might re-retire from Formula 1 at the end of the current season.
At a Mercedes-Benz event, Magic Moments in Stuttgart, Schumacher reassured the board that he would take up his third-year-option on his contract and would remain with Mercedes in 2012.
“I’ll certainly be racing next year, that is definite,” said the 42-year-old, but he added it was still too early to say whether he would continue past 2012. “We will have to see how things develop and how much energy and fun is still there.”
On the subject of next year and Mercedes’ potential, Schumacher ruled out fighting for the title, saying the team needs more time.
“It would be presumptuous if one expects us to fight for the title next year, at the moment we are too far behind,” said Schumacher.
Thomas Weber, Mercedes Head of Group Research agreed with the seven-time champion.
“We need a little longer to get to the top, but time is necessary. And we on the board will give that time.”
