Major calendar shake-up for 2012 season

The 2012 calendar is set for a major shake-up which would see Bahrain move toward the end of the season, whilst Turkey will be dropped altogether, according to Autosport.

The report suggests the Australian Grand Prix will once again open the season, replacing Bahrain which will move to November, before or after the Abu Dhabi GP.

This gives the organisers extra time to ensure the political situation within the country is stable, whilst ensuring the event doesn’t overshadow the new season after the teams expressed concern.

Australia will be followed by Malaysia, China and India before a three-week break, before the circus moves to Europe.

The break won’t be F1 free however, with a 3-day in-season test planned at either Mugello or Silverstone, marking the return of testing during the season.

The inaugural Austin GP in the United States will also be moved from its preliminary date in mid-June, due to the high temperatures, to become the penultimate event, making it a back-to-back event with the Brazilian GP which will once again close the season.

The Turkish GP is also likely to be dropped, after a provisional calendar confirmed 21-races, though FIA president Jean Todt later confirmed that one race would be dropped to meet the maximum 20-race regulation.
