McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh has shrugged off suggestions his job may have been at risk following a poor showing from McLaren at their home race, the British Grand Prix.
The media had speculated that he may be forced to step-down, with Ron Dennis looking to make a comeback as team principal, but Whitmarsh says the rumours were complete ‘garbage’.
“I was very honest at Silverstone and said that things were not going well and some interpreted it to be that my job was in danger,” El Pais quotes the Brit as saying.
“I don’t think anyone in the paddock who is minimally intelligent really believed that was so. When you’re at the head of one of the strongest teams you do have a lot of pressure on you. But the pressure I put on myself is much stronger than the garbage that’s in the press.”
He did admit however that the speculation made Lewis Hamilton’s recent win at the German Grand Prix last weekend all the sweeter.
“If I said it didn’t, I’d be lying,” he added.
