Karun Chandhok admits that 20th and last at the German Grand Prix wasn’t the result he wanted after suffering with heavy tyre degredation.
Having not raced in 2011 at all, the Indian only has expereince of the Bridgestone tyres from 2010 when he raced with Hispania. The new Pirelli tyres, which are made to lose grip much quicker, caught him by surprise.
“That’s a full race distance completed and an awful lot of learning under my belt,” said Chandhok. “Honestly, that probably wasn’t the race I wanted.
“I had a couple of high speed spins and I think I need more time to get used to the tyres,” he admitted. “When they start to go off there’s very little give compared to last year’s rubber, but that’s all part of the learning process and I’m glad I got the car home and did the best job I could.”
Team owner and principal Tony Fernandes was pleased with his performance, saying he completed the objective of brining the car home, even if he did finish two laps down on teammate Heikki Kovalainen.
“The main aim today was to bring two cars home and to make sure Karun could learn as much as possible over a full race distance. It is good that he finished the full 60 laps and showed some reasonable pace.”
