Hamilton: We went backwards this weekend

Lewis Hamilton concedes that McLaren have taken a step back rather than forward in Valencia after finishing fourth, unable to challenge either Red Bull or Fernando Alonso.

The McLaren driver was pleased to score some points after a DNF in Canada following an incident with his teammate, admitting the result couldn’t have been much better.

“Well, this was a good result compared to the last race,” he said with a smile after the race.

“We got a bad start – a very, very poor start – and I lost position to the Ferrari’s. But we weren’t as fast as the Ferrari’s anyway so I’m not sure I could have held them off anyway.

“I think we’ve taken a step back this weekend – or maybe the others have gone forward.”

Hamilton identified downforce as an area which needs improving if they’re to win at Silverstone in a fortnight.

“I think we’re quite a bit down in downforce,” he added. “We haven’t made an upgrade on that for several weeks, especially rear down-force, and I think that in the next race we may really struggle again once we lose the engine map, though, we can come back.”
