Lewis Hamilton insists he can still take victory in Valencia on Sunday, but only if luck and strategy are on his side.
The McLaren driver qualified in third, behind both Red Bull cars. Many believed the regulation changes introduced this weekend would favour McLaren, or at least lessen the gap to Red Bull, but that hasn’t been the case.
Nonetheless, the 2008 world champion is ‘excited’ to be in the fight for the win and says he’ll do everything he can to get past the leaders.
“I’m excited to be in the fight, we can win from this position,” he said following qualifying. “Of course, we’ll need a bit of luck with the strategy and the pitstops, but our guys are on great form.
“You’ve got to be fortunate and maximise absolutely everything to get ahead of the Red Bulls – and, hopefully, that can happen tomorrow.”
McLaren’s race pace has often been better than most others, including Red Bull’s, which gives Hamilton confidence.
“Our race pace has been pretty good over the past three races and we should be fast tomorrow too – so keep your fingers crossed!”
